Through a series of captivating read-aloud sessions and engaging activities children, parents, teachers and communities came together to celebrate the joy of learning. These stories revolved around creative thinking, helping others, empathy, diversity and promoting peace. Other than partner schools the PLP teams have conducted reading activities in public libraries, orphanage house and children’s hospital. One-day Capacity Building Workshops on Library Management and Library Period

The workshops took place in Kasur on 28th Nov, Vehari on 18th Nov, Multan on 2nd Nov, and Muzaffargarh on 25th Nov. The primary aim of these workshops was to empower 50 selected school heads from each district with knowledge and skills related to library management and the effective implementation of library periods. The focus was on fostering a culture of reading and enhancing reading habits among students. School heads were equipped with practical insights into organizing and maintaining a conducive library environment within their schools. An essential component of the workshops was the exploration of various reading activities. The participants engaged in interactive sessions designed to make the reading experience enjoyable and effective in capturing the students’ interest. As a practical resource, each participating school was provided with three sets of colorful stories adapted from Room to Read. These engaging materials were tailored to inspire a love for reading among students, with content carefully curated to align with educational goals. The one-day capacity building workshops left a positive impact on the participating school heads, providing them with valuable tools and strategies to enhance reading initiatives within their respective schools. The interactive nature of the sessions ensured that the knowledge gained could be readily applied. Highlights of the Visit: The Bahawalpur PLP team visited the libraries of partner schools in Lahore. They explored the available resources and infrastructure, gaining valuable insights into different approaches to promoting literacy. The team engaged in fruitful interactions with school principals, teachers, and students. This direct engagement provided an opportunity to understand the local context and the unique challenges faced by each school. The visit included observing ongoing reading activities in Lahore partner schools. The Bahawalpur PLP team actively participated by conducting reading activities. Both the Bahawalpur and Lahore PLP teams convened for an interactive meeting. The teams shared successful strategies, discussed challenges faced, and brainstormed innovative solutions. This exchange of ideas aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of literacy programs in both districts. The collaborative nature of interdistrict visits was evident as the teams shared best practices, successes, and lessons learned. Such interactions foster a culture of continuous improvement and inspire innovative approaches to literacy promotion. The Federal Minister for Education Madad Ali Sindhi inaugurated and welcomed the 15 new children’s books at the Inaugural session on November 25, 2023 in front of a packed audience. A Diverse Tapestry of Stories: All three publishers presented a rich array of stories, spanning genres that explore the vibrant cultures of Pakistan – from the enchanting wool of Chitral’s remote mountains to Bhavna’s quest for her friend in Tharparkar, Sindh. The narratives weave relatable daily life events like nani’s sewing, a passion for gardening, and the thrill of uncovering secrets. Transporting readers to a magical realm, stories feature characters like Detective Hawk/Jasoos Uqaab, the banana-troubled Chutki the monkey, and a young bear grappling with school-related anxiety. Even inanimate objects like dry fruits, vegetables, fruits, and bhel puri ingredients come to life, spreading joy. Beautifully illustrated, these tales aspire to cultivate a love for reading and curiosity among children. Interactive Discussions with Creators: With the video messages from our technical partners Joel Bacha, Senior Director, Program Operations, and Mahesh Pathirathna, Asia Regional Program Manager, Room to Read the highlight of the event was the interactive discussions with the authors and illustrators. Moderated by experts in the field, Saleem Mughal, Rumana Husain and Dr. Najeeba Arif, these discussions provided a behind-the-scenes look at the creative process of producing children’s literature. They were also part of the Read Aloud sessions at the Storytelling Hub called Kahani Kunj at the festival where everyone was welcomed for share and read stories with expression Authors shared their inspirations, challenges, and the joy of creating stories for young minds. Illustrators, on the other hand, provided insights into the visual elements, emphasizing the importance of captivating imagery in children. Engaging the Young Audience: To make the event truly interactive, the new titles were read aloud to the audience, bringing the characters to life for 1000s of young listeners. Additionally, various activities such as drawing sessions and storytelling workshops allowed children to actively participate in the enchanting world of the stories. Story Walks: Each book from each publisher namely Katran Kahani, Dhoondo Dhoondo Sohni Dharti, and Chutki  and Jasus Uqaab had its own life sized Story Walk placed near the entrance, providing an exciting opportunity for children to engage with the narratives as they walked into the learning festival site. These Story Walks featured large panels and character cutouts, creating an immersive experience where children could interact with the stories in a dynamic and visual way. These installations not only added a playful element to the event but also encouraged active participation, allowing children to step into another world. The book launch event was not merely a presentation of stories but a celebration of creativity, and playful learning; they are a testament to the enduring power of storytelling in Pakistan like anywhere else in the world. Parents were also present and it was heartwarming to see parents actively participating and appreciating their children. We were honored to have Ms. Rashida, Section Officer ER, School Education Department Punjab, grace us with her presence at one of the schools. She took a keen interest in the classroom corner libraries, fostering a love for reading among students. Ms. Rashida also engaged with parents, exchanging valuable ideas for the continuous improvement of our schools. This initiative aimed to train a total of 38 participants, including coordinators, co-coordinators, and language experts from the FDE. During the TOT, the participants gained skills to promote reading habits, design library routines according to grade levels, and create interactive learning activities perfectly aligning with the FDE’s mission to promote reading habits among students. The training covered key aspects, including explaining reading habits, describing activities to develop these habits, introducing the Reading Hour initiative and interactive libraries, teaching library routines based on grade levels, and developing learning activities supporting reading and managing libraries. The importance of child-friendly libraries and the roles of teachers and librarians in creating such environments were also discussed. An action plan for post-workshop implementation was outlined. These Trainers were further instructed by the Deputy Director FDE to conduct two-day training sessions for schools in clusters of 25, focusing on reading skills and the ‘Reading Habit’. Once the teachers from all the schools will be equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills, each school will introduce the ‘Reading Habit’ once a week to enhance the reading skills. This initiative seeks to instill a love for reading among students in FDE schools, adapting to the diverse conditions of schools with and without libraries. He visited four schools in district Bahawalpur (Govt. Boys High School Arabic Bindra, Govt. Girls Elementary School Bindra, Govt. Elementary School 5/BC and Govt. Girls Elementary School Gull Dera) and two schools in district Lahore (GBMS Muslim Colony Rajgarah and GGES Ichra No.2), unfortunately, he was unable to visit more schools due to school closure as a precautionary measure for pink eye infection. During the visit to each school, he was briefed about the schools and the impact of libraries on the children i.e., increased readability, children’s motivation along with challenges faced at initial stages.  During his visits to schools various reading activities were observed in different classes as per the libraries timetable of each respective school. After the reading activities, students were also involved in an interactive discussion with David sharing favorite books, what children like about those books and how many times they checked out their favorite books. During brief discussions, teachers also shared the noticeable changes in student-teacher relationship, improved readability and awareness of various reading levels of children. David also had productive discussions with the Community Resource Group members regarding their interest in the libraries, co-creation of solutions for challenges faced and strategies to sustain the libraries.  I conclusion David left the following remarks in one of our schools GGES Ichra No.2: “It was a pleasure visiting your school and seeing the efforts and commitments you are making to bring the joy of reading to all children and their parents. Thank you so much.  David Strawbridge -RtR”   Meeting with Government Officials:  The district teams in both districts arranged the meetings with District Education Authorities with participants including CEO’s, DEO’s, DDEO’s and AEO’s who appreciated the efforts of RtR and ITA for establishment and provision of continuous support in libraries. During the discussion the government officials emphasized the establishment of libraries in other government schools as well.   An online meeting was held between David, the PLP team and QAED where the teachers’ training methodology and process was discussed. Furthermore, the days for the library management and library period training were discussed.  A meeting was held between the Additional Secretary Education (B&P) Mr. Qaiser Rasheed, Section officer Mr. Asim Cheema, Saba Saeed, Farah Shah and Talha Iftikhar in his office on 29th September 2023 to discuss the implementation of the Reading hour in Punjab. Elementary School Muslim Colony, Rajgarh, as Room to Read’s Vice President of Program Operations, Mr. Michael Bowers, along with CEO Ms. Baela Raza Jamil and Senior Program Manager Ms. Saba, paid a special visit to the Pakistan Literacy Project’s library. Guided by District Manager Ms. Farah Shah, the team received insights into the library’s functioning and its impact on students. The visit commenced with Sir Zulqarnain conducting a captivating read-aloud session for Class Five, sparking interactive activities that kept the students thoroughly engaged. The students, eager to immerse themselves in the world of literature, were then given the opportunity to select their favorite books for checkout. Moving on to the next class, Ms. Rabia orchestrated a paired reading session, encouraging students to discuss and review the books they read. Ali Hamza, a remarkable fifth-grade student, even took the lead by conducting a heartfelt read-aloud of his favorite story, showcasing the library’s nurturing environment for young leaders. Beyond the literary activities, a warm and friendly interaction unfolded between Mr. Bowers and the students, centered around topics ranging from favorite foods to beloved characters. These conversations not only bridged gaps but also added a personal touch to the visit, creating a positive and enthusiastic atmosphere. Post-library activities, the team reconvened in the principal’s office for a reflective discussion on the library’s impact. Ms. Iram Shahzadi, the school principal, shared valuable insights into how the library has significantly contributed to enhancing students’ reading skills and subsequently increased enrollment. The key personas involved in this transformative experience included Michael Bowers (Room to Read), Ms. Baela Raza Jamil (CEO, ITA), Ms. Saba Saeed (Senior Program Manager ITA), Mr. Talha Iftikhar (M&E ITA), Ms. Farah Shah (District Manager), and Ms. Izzah Ramzan (Coach-Mentor).
